Behind the scenes

From a messy notebook to a rolling garden

Every good project starts as a scribble. Before the polish, there were pages of brainstorms, budgets, and crossed-out ideas. Here's the real planning behind the Rolling Garden, straight from our team's notebooks.

The plan

what do we actually do?

  • Build a website to share the mission
  • Choose our herbs & grow them from starters
  • Draft emails to sponsors & senior facilities
  • Pool communal funds for plants & supplies

Our aim: bring the garden to seniors. For residents in specialized memory care units, getting outdoors is hard, so we bring the outdoors in.

The design debate

Option 1: one rolling cart

Four planted sections, each labeled with its herb. ✔ professional, novel · ✘ harder to build, needs care

Option 2: separate pots

Individual pots passed hand to hand. ✔ easy, accessible · ✘ less cohesive, less polished

we chose the wagon!

4 sections, 1 herb each

The budget

  • Plastic utility cart$45–75
  • Grow pots$15–20
  • Soil & plant food$15–20
  • Herb starter plants$20–30
  • Lamination supplies$10
Total $105–155

Funded by the team (~$30 each) plus sponsor & local-nursery donations.

That notebook grew into something real.
